Our Story

Squirrel was founded in Roxbury, Massachusetts in 1888 and registered with the U.S. patent office.

In 1889, Mr. Perley G. Gerrish acquired Squirrel and moved the company to Cambridge, Massachusetts. He began selling mixed nut varieties throughout the Boston area, helping expand the brand’s early reach and reputation.

Squirrel Brand became known for master-roasted nut products, carefully selected ingredients, and a tradition of flavor that helped define the brand for generations.

Squirrel Brand lived through the Industrial Revolution, two World Wars, the Great Depression, and decades of change while remaining associated with premium nut products and consistent quality.

Squirrel Brand’s nuts were carried on Admiral Richard Byrd’s Antarctic expedition and shipped around the world during World War II, reinforcing the brand’s long-standing reputation for freshness and quality.

Today, Squirrel Brand continues as part of John B. Sanfilippo & Son, Inc., carrying forward a tradition of premium nut craftsmanship with products made for snacking, sharing, and gifting.
